The David Montgomery Award is given annually by the OAH with co-sponsorship by the Labor and Working-Class History Association (LAWCHA) for the best book on a topic in American labor and working-class history. Eligible works shall be written in English and deal with United States history in significant ways but may include comparative or transnational studies that fall within these guidelines.

At the recent LAWCHA conference here in Washington, D.C., I was among those applauding heartily when Empire of Cotton: A Global History, Sven Beckert’s sweeping study, received the Philip Taft Labor History Book Award. Martel Wilcher Montgomery, beloved wife and partner in life of David Montgomery, passed away on June 3, 2015 at the Crosslands Community in Kennett Square, PA, where she and David had made their home since leaving New Haven. Her sons, Claude and Ed, organized a celebration of her life that brought together family and friends on June 8 for music, poetry, and shared remembrances of a life well lived.

One of the flight’s intended passengers was Malcolm Butler, defensive back for the New England Patriots, best known for his game winning interception in the final seconds of the Super Bowl this past February.
