Jim Barret is Professor of History and African American Studies at the University of Illinois. He is the author of The Irish Way: Becoming American in the Multi-Ethnic City.

I always listen carefully to and learn from Nelson, but I think he and I disagree a bit. His distinction between the series and the field is vital. Even with over 130 volumes in print, a lot of labor history has occurred outside the series.

Are courses in labor and working-class history in higher education on the decline? If so, is this a particular problem, or part of a more general crisis in the discipline? Are students less interested in labor history than they once were?
